    Question IOS & Windows Protection errors installing Maxtor 27.2 GB hard drive

    I have a friend who is attempting to install a Maxtor 27.2 GB hard drive in his system. I don't have any details on the system, as he is geographically distant from me & I just received his question via e-mail. He FDisk's & Formats it successfully, he then tries to load Windows 95 in preparation of a 98 upgrade. He gets this error on the first re-boot during installation.

    I would appreciate any input on this!

    You should ask him about his configuration.
    Maybe he needs a BIOS upgrade in order to make it work.

    Alien may be on to something. There was an issue with Quantum drives and IOS errors.

    Is your friend putting on 98 upgrade on right away. If so why install 95? Just run 98 setup and when it does the compliance check put the 95 disc in and point to it. It runs much better and keeps windows cleaner.

    Cool

    For the IOS error try this -

    CAUSE: Occurs when all memory below 1MB is allocated Prior to initialization of Ios.vxd

    SOLOUTION : Add the following to the SYSTEM.INI file

    [vcache]
    maxfilecache=6144

    Thanks guys!

    I'm passing on all of this info to the individual having the problem. I've also included links to some MS Knowledge Base articles that may apply. I had forgotten to mention that the hard drive in question is a Maxtor, so the Quantum issue does not apply. I took the advice of AlienDyne & Larommi, & suggested he just use the 98 upgrade CD, submitting the 95 CD for proof of upgrade eligibility when prompted.

    Fat_Eric's tip is one I've not heard before, I'll add that to my tech notes for future reference.

    I'm afraid the BIOS upgrade is probably the minimum upgrade needed to resolve this issue. Hopefully flashable. I'll post the results here when I get them.

    Thanks again all!

    If he's running an AMD 350+, that needs a patch for Win95, otherwise it gives IOS errors. Find out what the hardware is.
