I've seen this frequently when printing from Word, the only thing to do is a total uninstall, then reinstall.

Microsoft TechNet article Q168198 has extensive troubleshooting info for Word 97 IPF's. If you have damaged Word or Office files, reinstalling is the only option. Of course, the question to consider in that case is why...
On the other hand, here are a series of questions you may want to consider to narrow down the problem...
1 - Is the problem reproducible, or does it only happen at random times?
2 - Does the problem only occur in Word, or does it occur in other applications as well?
3 - Does the problem only happen with a particular document (or a collection of documents)?
4 - Does the problem only occur at a particular time, such as when starting Word or printing?
One item I found interesting in the above article is to see if Word will start with the /a switch (WinWord.exe /a). If so, then you have a damaged Registry Data key or a Normal.dot global template. There is a fix for this if that is your problem.
Hope this helps.
