    i was plugging cheap...
    you can get a nic at compusa for 19 bucks, (need two)
    and then can get a cable made from a techie shop (i hate making cables) for about 10-20
    for 24 each, you can get a netgear fa311 (10/100) which is some serious speed for a serious budget.

    (i have two netgear FA311 nics in my server, works great, especially at full duplex with my FS105 5 port switch...)(one for cable modem, other for network)

    Get a Parrallel "LapLink" cable and use Windows 9x "Direct Cable Connection" via the parrallel cable. This is cheap ($10-20) and as a temporary solution does not require so much as a screwdriver. However you will not be able to use the parrallel cable and your printer at the same time, as well as it will be a LOT SLOWER than the other solutions suggested.

    Wow, thanks all, I've had a day off and I'm overwhelmed with the response!!
    I think I'm going to have to read up a bit more to go the nic route, but thanks to all for your replies, its all useful info,
