    Question Cd will not autoplay

We recently had a computer in our shop that would not play cd's properly. After a thorough cleaning it appeared the cdrom was working. The customer called back claiming the cd would not autoplay.

We have looked for IDE conflicts and did not find any. There are no real mode drivers loaded. Auto insert is checked in the device manager. We have even gone as far as replacing the drive. My question is, is there a setting in win98 that we missed? I have tweak loaded in my machine so I have never had to look for settings. Is there another place that we should be looking?

    Thanks in advance!

are they trying to use an audio cd or a data cd. audio cd's should bring up the cd player if its been installed. not all data cd's have auto run capabilities. check to see what data cd they are using. if there is a file called autorun.inf then it should autorun, if not then it was never designed to.

Is the cdrom configured as a slave to the hard drive or on its own controller? I have had situations where if it is set as a slave to the hard drive it would not autoplay. Don't ask me why I don't know. I just moved it to the secondard channel as a master device and they have worked fine.

Yes, some of the cd's are supposed to autoplay. At least they do in any other machine that they are in. That was one of the first things we looked at. I will have to check into the IDE channels the drive is located on. I am not sure if it is a slave on the master or master on the secondary. I do not believe this has anything to do with it do to the fact that this machine has been running good since April.

Thanks for the help so far. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I tried to install a USB CD-Burner and had to call sony for help. They had me go into the Device Manager and "take of" the autoplay function. Matbe it has been disabled for your problem.

Click on the properties of the CD Drive and it is in that screen. You will have to re-start...

    Hope this helps.

The drive has been replaced with a new one. Still no luck.

If it used to work and now it doesn't.....chances are that the user screwed something up along the way in the OS. What really leads me to this conclusion is the fact that cds which used to autoplay don't on this system and that even when replaced by a new CD-ROM the disc still doesn't autoplay. Something happened to the drivers or something was installed which hampers the autoplay. The user might want to take their losses and reformat and reload.

    Good luck,

    J.

    Angry

Turns out the customer had Tweak installed. GRRR that really bothers me. I asked her if she had it and she said no. Well, everything is all better.

Thanks for all your help, everybody!
