Post Me Stupid. How do I decode the DVD?

I bought a Toshiba DVDROM- now I am trying to play a movie, and then I realize there was no software that came with the DVD!

I need to have this up and running and I don't know what to download from where...

Win98 reads the DVD as a regular CD ROM--

    Now what?

now you get to go spend some more money on a video card that can decode the dvd and comes with playback software. I recommend anything by ATI with a rage 128 chip on it to do this. An expert 2000 32mb is what I'm using and it smokes in games as well. (openGL support as well as D3D)

I already have a 32mb S3 card that has DVD decoding capabilities! The place where I hurt (sorely) is the software.... Any freeware out there for decoding DVDs?

My rear end hurts too from falling on ice. Damn Minnesota weather....

Try going to ZDNET.com to their free downloads, I believe they have freeware DVDdecoders like DVDGenie and others. Ya gotta be a member though...da punks.
If your WIN98 system still see's the drive as a CD-ROM go to the Toshiba Website, and look up the jumper settings. May not be neede, but worth the look though the tech help pages.

I'm in Reno NV and we just got enough SNOW TO GO SKIIING!!! THANK GOD...ABOUT BLOODY TIME! Now I'm really gonna be broke!

Shouldn't your S3 card come with a DVD player software if it has the DVD decoder on-board?

I would check your Vid-Card driver CD to see if it came with a player or not. My VooDoo 3500 as far I could tell does not have hardware MPEG2 decompression, but it came with WinDVD that does it softwarewise

Ok, so I gave in and finally downloaded PowerDVD. Now I try to play a DVD and it say this disk is not bad. I just need to purchase or rent a DVD made for my region.

What the F*ck is that about now? I have spent all day on this stupid thing.

Thanks for your help guys! Meanwhile, I will keep doing my research!

Sounds like you need to change your region. DVD encoding differs from east coast to west coast and from country to country. If the country the DVD was encoded for doesn't match your encoding, it won't work. Beware, don't change the region too often. Most software will only let you change it 4 or 5 times. It's one of those monkey wrenches they threw into the DVD industry to prevent piracy.

Come'on guys...if you want to give referrals, why not start with Windrivers -- http://www.windrivers.com/dvd/index.htm -- the XingDVD gives you full playback, some of the others only give a few minute 'preview.'
