The drive door started not opening as expected, this was sidestepped by manualy opening the door. At this time, the access light does activate, but Windows '98 refuses to allow any access or diplay the drive name in Windows Explorer.
I removed the data cable in an attempt to reseat it, while off, it operated as expected. When replaced it operates as reported earlier.
I attempted to reaet other things without success.
I'd simply replace it with a CD-R if I had the money.
as far as I can see I'd guess you should try a firmware upgrade..
and disable DMA for this drive (USE PIO4) - BIOS..

Sorry, I couldn't find where to use PI04 in th eBIOS. I have a PowerSpec [microCenter home grown] Cyrix Media 2 GX 233 with 64Mb win '98-
Which firmware do you suggest I upgrade?
The access light does blink & sometimes is on kinda steady maybe 2 seconds.
is this the sort or thing one might expect from a bad IDE cable?

setting PIO mode 4 meaning disabling DMA or UDMA on your Mobo..
take a look at your mobo manual.
as for firmware try to find one here :
http://perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/firmware/
you alos might consider replacing the IDE cable and trying a different Power connection.
Hope it helps
