Pinnacle 5040i help in WIN98 SE
Hi. My problem is this: I just recently reformatted my hdd and installed WIN 98SE. Win recognizes my Pinnacle 5040i burner but when I go to burn a cd, WIN 98 locks up. I have the new ASPI32 installed and am using the drivers the EZ CD CREATOR installed for it. It's fine until I want to actually burn a cd. In fat if i didn't turn off Auto Insert and Disconnect, WIN 98 would lock up trying to recognize the blank cd regardless of what I do. I am at my wits end but believe the answer is simple and I just can't see it.

Was your cd burner originally working before you reinstalled win98 se?
Try the cd burner in another good known working computer system to see if the same thing happens. That could help to rule out if the cd burner itself is bad or not.
Have you checked for the latest updated patches for the adaptec ez cd creator software at www.adaptec.com?
Sometimes cd burners can't handle dma, so make sure it is unchecked under cd-rom settings in device manager.
Sometimes, certain cd-burners don't like to work with certain brands of burn cd's. IE) I found that Ricoh cdrw's don't like to properly burn with Maxell cd's, but work fine with Verbatem or Sony cd's.
Don't have any screensavers or any other programs running in the background when doing a burn because that risks in lockups and coasters.
Have the burner on the secondary ide channel, unless it is a scsi model, and your main cdrom on primary ide channel slaved to your hd. That helps to prevent buffer under run errors if you do cd to cd copying.
Have the latest video and sound drivers for your computer system.
I had a service where someone did burns and it would lockup. Turned out all that fixed it was getting the latest ATI video drivers for his ati card (I forgot which model of ati, this happened a while ago).
That's all I can suggest.
Hope this helps you.

The unit worked fine under Win 95c but I wanted to go to Win 98. It worked on on OS but not the next. It has worked under Win 95 A, B, and C. I don't want to go with Win 2000 yet. I'll wait for further releases there. I have all the newer video, sound and other drivers I can think of too. Even newer ones for my SCSI host card ( Adaptec 2940 SCSI-2)
any other ideas?
