Your Server(s) O/S
Hi,
I am curious as to what people are using in thier networking environment, servers in particular but can include workstations as well. Nothing in theory but real world. (So don't give a pitch on Linux if you aren't using it).
So what are you using, any things you like about it? dislike? improvements? etc.
I will give you a brief:
WE have 3 servers (DELLS).
1 PDC running NT 4.0, this server is also a file server and print server.
1 BDC running NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5. This is our mail server (obviously) Internet server.
1 Member server running NT 4.0 which is used for a very resource intensive Visual Foxpro accounting program. I must say I can not stand this third party program. Their Knowledge base stinks and it is hard to network with people about problems with it when nobody you know uses it. So I usually end on the phone rather than researching (I hate being on the phone). And on more than one occasion have the tech support people pointed a finger at MS.
I also have a couple of Windows 95 machines acting as stand alone servers and all they really do is hold archived documents which is used for research. It comes in handy and if the machine crashes these documents are never changed so they can be restored from a CD.
As far as workstations we use ALOT of Windows 95 workstations but we are finally leaving 1995 and bringing in XP. I myself have Windows 2000 Pro.
Software we use Office 97 but are upgrading little by little. We have a couple of people using Act 2000.
All in all I think NT 4.0 is stable for our purposes and Windows 95 is well Windows 95.
Have a good day,
D

What Visual Foxpro accounting program are you using? We use SBT Accounting Systems and we have found their support is not very good at all.

We have too many servers to list individually, so here's the jist:
Compaq Fluid RAID (1 terra soon to be 3)
2 Compaq DL380
3 Compaq Proliant 5500
various other Compaq doing F&P
Custom builds doing various network funtions (includes system running swipe card doors)
Servers run either NT40 SP6a or 2000
1000+ systems Canada wide running everything from Win95 to lastest OS (Dells, compaqs, customs)
MAC up to OSX
I won't even start to go into what we have in the US (I'd like to go home sometime today! )

~5 NT4/2k servers, for Exchange and web (no, I don't know why he won't switch to something like Unix or Linux for the web serving, seeing as how IIS looks like swiss cheese to a virus.) and a Unix (Solaris) machine running DHCP/DNS services and POP.

Okay.. let the chest beating commence.
1 AS400, running accounting & stock control systems
2 Win2k application servers (various apps)
2 NT 4.0 servers, file & print servers, PDC & BDC.
1 Lotus Notes R5 server (win2k) handles Email and intranet duties, and handles it very nicely.
~4 various linux boxes onsite, doing various duties.
~200 workstations, running either NT 4.0, or Win2k, soon to be all Win2k.
1 Win2k backup server.
Thats about all that come to mind at the moment...

There are a lot of other sites in the company now (a large merger has just taken place) so Im unsure of the setup the rest of the sites have, but Im assuming its pretty similar.

Ok, let's see.
1 As400 server running accounting software
1 Novell 5 server
1 Groupwise 6.0 server
2 Novell 4 servers
Several hundred workstations running Win 98 (Primarily), Win 2k, Win XP, and yes a handful of Win 95.

What do you think of Novell? If you had the chance would you trade Novell for MS product (like XP or 2000 pro)? Guess this question could go toward anyone running NON MS.
