Post DHCP Server on Win2000 Server

I have configured a Windows 2000 Advanced Server Machine as a Domain Controller, and am trying to run DHCP on the machine for our local network, and use it as a router/gateway. Users can logon to the domain successfully, only from Win2000 though, not 98. Having problems figuring this out. In 98, says no domain controller present. Hmm. But when 2k users logon successfully, they don't pick up the DHCP addresses from the Server, and they are configured to Obtain them Automatically at each local machine. My scope is defined on the Server and options for Gateway and DNS servers are configured as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, for DHCP, do I need two NICS on the server?? Any good articles more in depth the MS would also be great. Thanks!!!

Ok. There is an option somewhere(not sure where) that will allow you to log on older clients, Active directories uses DNS to sort out the users.

Now as for your DHCP issue. a few things you need to track.

you need one DHCP server per subdomain unless your running a relay agent on the router connecting that segment. The reson for this is that DHCP discover packets can't use IP, therefor they are restricted to layer2. That means they can't go beyond a router. The relay agent picks up the Discover, Offer, Request, Ack and NAck packets to pass through the router. Your server does not require a dedicated NIC for DHCP, it DOES require a nic on the network that you plan to provide IPs for.

If your computer is not Getting the DHCP lease, get a packet sniffer on the network and look for the discover packets. If you don't see them, maybe the comps aren't sending them out.

You might need to set computer or user rights to have pre-windows 2000 access. Do this under active directory users and computers.

You don't need two nics on the server in order to run DHCP. You may need to authorize the server if you're running RIS. Are you clients on the same segment (plugged in the same hub/switch)?
