cloning drive to new machine

Later today I will be cloning a drive to a new machine. I remember reading in the forums once before on what registry key to remove in order for the new motherboard resources to be installed corectly. Does anyone remember this topic or know where to find it?

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/ENUM

Delete the folder and reboot and the system should go thorugh all the finding new hardware procedure

I never seem to have luck with deleting ENUM so I go into device manager and delete everything but PNP Bios. In order to deleted the harddrive controller, I go into ENUM and delete the MF folder. Reboot and boom badda bing

Funny.. I've always had luck going into SAFE mode and removing Plug and Play Bios in device manager.. seems to do the same thing as ENUM, you just have to do a hardware autodetect for Windows to find pnp bios again. Removing the pnp bios from device manager will clear out all the devices.

BTW, if you haven't transferred the data yet, Aloha Bob's PC Relocator works really good for transfering data from one Windows 9x/ME machine to another (without messing up settings on the new computer)

You are both correct. You can go into device manager and remove everything - one at a time - open - select - delete - confirm - open - select - delete - confirm - open - select - delete - confirm - open - select - delete - confirm ........ and eventually you will get all of them. Unless of course, you delete the hard drive controller first, and then you get to start all over again cuz typically you PC will lock up after that one. Going through the registry is a couple of quick clicks solution.

good idea, but make sure the windows CAB files are on the hard drive somewhere when you re-boot or do the clone.

Sometimes on the first re-boot the CD-ROM is not there when you need drivers the most.

I have found that it is sometimes quicker to delete the enum key from dos, to do this boot to the safe command prompt change the directory to c:\windows then type regedit /d hkey_local_machine\enum then re-boot. This of course will not work with windows me, but who uses win ME anyway?
