What exactly is SCSI Differential?

I'm working on a system that has a bad SCSI Controller and need a little help.

What exactly is SCSI Differential? The hard drive is a Seagate ST410800WD, which is a 10.8 Gig Wide Differntial SCSI drive.

Is it compatable with an Adaptec 2940U/UW? Or will I have to find some older/used controller to replace it with?

I think you are referring to an LVD drive / controller.

(LVD) A method of driving SCSI cables that will be formalised in the SCSI-3 specifications. LVD uses less power than the current differential drive (HVD), is less expensive and will allow the higher speeds of Ultra-2 SCSI. LVD requires 3.3 Volts DC instead of 5 Volts DC for HVD.

I think you will need a controller that supports LVD or an adapter to use the 2940UW.

I thought there was a version of the 2940 that supported LVD, but I can't find it.

Adaptec does list the SCSI Card 29160 as having one 68-pin LVD capable connection.

I'm pretty sure that differential and LVD are different. This drive is about 3 years old, and I belive LVD is quite a bit newer.
