Not even close to some of the "Gods" in this forum, but I'll do my bit!

I think in terms of the OSI model.
Does that make me qualified to be here?

I'm currently working as a Systems Administrator and company Programmer for a large Collections agency. I have 5 years of computer experience in a retail environment, A+ certified, soon to be Net+, & MCSE. I'm also about 1 month shy of completing degrees in Network Administration and Software Development.

I don't work in the computer industry at all but I put together systems as a side job. I've fiddled with this stuff since I was a kid and have gained a bit of knowledge in the field through reading and my side work. I have my A+ but after taking the test I realize that it doesn't mean too much.(the questions were sooo basic that I think anyone with an Exam Cram book could pass it)
I won't respond to a post unless I'm absolutely sure that I can help but I certainly enjoy reading the expert replies of other members. (I'm starting to ramble, hold on!) In my oppinion, I believe that most of the members here have something usefull to offer and even if we aren't computer techs by trade we might be so by hobby!

I was doing USR Modem support & the guys who claimed MSCE [questioning our suggestions] was most annoying. {we wanted so much to ask them what they were doing on our phone, if they knew so much. [msce is a software certificate]} I gues that I say this because certs are simple pices of paper; but they do tend to prove to potenial employeers the your serious.
The cost for this kind of training is the crime.

I am a PC/A/v tech for a retail store. Self-taught. Was a Mac Tech *Cough* *Cough* in the Mac Lab in High School. I can get buy many things that my A+, MCSE, Cisco, Novell, and IBM certified co-workers can't even get close to. ....D**N Jumper settings!!! LOL!!! I have earned the adoration of many happy build customers, ID10T error customers, and even some other Techs with better paying less-work jobs. All different walks of life put their two-cents in here. I LOVE Being a TECHIE!!! (most of the time) Will Tech fer quan!!

Does a BS in chemistry count as a cert? Been blowing up computer since apple ][e and TSR model 4s in 10th grade. Aside from that 4 years as a benchtech and another year and half as a net tech. But for last 7 months just a coder/webmaster. It is all downhill from here.

I am hesitant at calling myself a tech. I have worked in our workshop for three years now and I do most of the bench work. I still get stuck with some issues but 95% of jobs I cansend out without help. My husband says to everyone that I am a better tech than any of the guys hes had working for him ( he has trade quals and 20 years on the job). but maybe he is biased.

reboot,as you can see most of the people in here are either certified or have vast amounts of experience which in my mind counts more than a certification on paper.I think this shows you how passionate people are about PC's regardless of their qualifications......(Support Analyst,MCSE+I,A+,DTP and 3D Animation...)
