[RESOLVED] Can't find CD Drive
I have a challenge, to install WIN 95 on an old machine "Future Tech"?.(not sure on identity, but it has a large floppy disk drive and a 512 MB HD clean with no OS) My problem is that the CD ROM drive can not be found during boot up. The ribbon cable is plugged into the sound card. I've tried booting to DOS 6.22 boot disk and loading generic drivers, however the drive cannot be found, so the installation is cancelled? I not sure where to go from here.

What does it say on the top of the actual CD-ROM drive itself???
Also what sound card is it connected to (if unknown check the large chips on the card & post as much info here).
It sounds to me as it is a Proprietory CD-ROM (Mitsumi,Sony,Panasonic, etc) that needs the Sound card drivers installing first to initialise the interface and then the CD-ROM drivers afterwards.

The sound card has a chip that reads:
ESS Audiodrive.
The CD ROM has the following written on the top:
Model CR-562-B
Matsu****a-Kotobuki Electronics Industries LTD.

It is a Proprietory Panasonic drive (Dual Speed) which requires the sound card to be installed in DOS first before the CD-Rom can be loaded.
Can you find as much information as possible on the Sound Card please. I.e. Any model numbers, screen printed numbers or codes on the actual PCB, numbers on the main chipset, etc. The more information tat you can give us the easier it will be to find the drivers for the sound card.
Give this a try though first.
Install DOS 6.22 (complete)
after installing, extract this Driver which is for the Panasonic Proprietory drives.
If this works then you should have a cd-rom drive to install win9x with.

Win95 has its own driver for the CR562, if the drive is on a Panasonic interface on the sound card (check that it's not IDE which has the same 40 pin connector), the easiest way round it might be to temporarily fit an IDE CD to the system as a slave to the Hard Drive, & install W95. Confirm that drivers have been installed for the sound card (if not you will need to get ESS drivers for the chip the card uses), even if not, mostly the interface on ESS cards works anyway. Shut down, & change back to the CR562, start up & Win should find the drive and install its own driver.
If you have to install Win from the 562, or if you need to have it operating from the DOS prompt for games, you will need the DOS drivers, some can be found here:
http://www.panasonic.com/support/sof...oem_cd_dvd.htm
fourth down the page, 56X_DOS.exe
If you need sound for DOS games you also may need to find DOS drivers for the sound card, although some games which address the sound chips directly may work without drivers.
There is also some discussion here:
http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin...ML/001278.html
regarding someone with similar needs.
Hope it helps.
(And now we've got Darren back, he posts while you're typing your reply...) darn, the smiley won't go in the right place, it keeps jumping to my sig...

LOL, I had some email communication about it too, but I don't know how it ended up.
