Yeah, Macgyver, i had the NIC enabled in the bios if that's where you are going with that...
Well it was enabled until I DISabled it that is, after trying drivers from the cd and the website, I had to go with a PCI NIC and PCI video card...
(Thank the Maker for the used pci S3trio64 card we had lying around!)

So now it is up and stable and updated now to sp6 and IE 6, and i am posting on it now as well. So thanks again team for all your support. For real.

Oh, and WTF? no built-in defrag utility? geez.

One of the issues with NT was that it was not a PnP aware OS. For many pieces of hardware everything needed to be configured manually -- IRQs, memory addresses, DMA channels.

There is a file on the installation CD -- isapnp.sys or pnpisa.sys -- that can be installed that will give the system partial PnP capabilities, at least for anything with an ISA interface. The instructions for installing a SB16 PnP sound card in NT 4 will tell you how to do this -- look at Creative's website. I don't know whether this feature was included in later service packs or not.

This might help with the onboard stuff, maybe not.

NT was always so picky about hardware that I always used to install only one adapter at a time starting with the video card. I would also install the MS Loopback Adapter in place of a NIC so that things could be set up properly during installation and the NIC could be added later when the basic OS was stable.

If you want to use the onboard stuff, you might try a similar process, disabling everything except the video card and then proceed adding one device at a time.

Each service pack includes the updates of the previous ones.. all you need to install is 6a. Has for the defraq program, look here.

    <a href="http://www.diskeeper.com" target="_blank">Executive Software</a>

you can download a trial version that will do a basic defrag.

Gald to hear you got it working.
