[RESOLVED] Repeated format errors-2 CDR units

Win95 HP7100+ vanilla configuration - I get formatting errors now on CDR blank disks when it used to work months ago. These type blanks were used ok on other systems. I removed/reinstalled EasyDiskCreator - same result. I even removed the HP7100+ and installed a new Yamaha CRW2216E with new software - same result. I have two HDD's on the primary IDE and a CDROM and CDRW slave/master on the secondary. Any ideas?

Maybe it's just me but I'm wondering why you are attempting to format a CDR disc? These should be ready for you to use and you should only have to format cdrw discs.

Whether a CDR blank is used for music or data it appears to need formatting which can take up to an hour. System always calls for it.

Sorry about private msg. I didn't realize that the IDE cable position mattered for master/slave. I will reverse them and see what happens.

It doesn't unless you are using an ATA66/100 cable.

My trusty old Dell Dimension 200mhz must have ATA66 although I am not sure. Bootup locates everything correctly. CDROM's read fine from both drives. Only the format goes wrong. I will reverse the drives on the cable and see.

If it is a Dell 200Mhz PC with the original motherboard then it will be an Intel i430 chipset which will support upto ATA33.

Then something along the line is screwed in the software or the drive itself as normal CDR (write once) discs do not need formatting, but CDRW discs do before first use. The only time I can think of that this message to format a CDR disc could come up is if you are using DirectCD or other CDRW software that enables Drag n Drop, to Drag n Drop files via Windows Explorer (or to save files directly to the CD rather than to teh Hard disk).

I am a bit further in testing. You fellows are right about separate formatting which is needed only for DirectCD optn.

I now test using COPYCD to the HP device and am getting same errors when writing track 1.
Called HP with error msgs as follows
T7303 Trackwriter error -Undef or inval param
T7118 Trackwriter error -Command retry fail
D0100 I/O error Command err - out of sequence

HP says the D0100 is usually a power problem? My Dell has a 200W supply which is ample. I recabled, removed 2nd HDD and CDROM. I removed the device and the software and reinstalled. Same problem. Earlier, I even replaced the HP with a new Yamaha writer with similar results. I soon will run out of blanks. I have run out of ideas.

RECOMMENDATION IS FOR HP TO ANNOUNCE A PRODUCT RECALL. I have checked the HP support forum(UK). 20 users of cdwriters complain of unreliable units(7100, 7200 9xxx). Sudden and unexplained appearance of "Trackwriter" errors where units stop writing. Reading is not a problem. HP support does not respond - will not fix problem or replace unit unless within warranty. Only solution is to trash the units some of which are just out of warranty.

When I worked on a machine a few monthes ago I had a similiar problem after much research and much hair pulled out I still didn't have a solution. Then I went out on a limb and turned down the graphics acceleration, the cd's copied without any trouble.
