[RESOLVED] IE5 Timeout

I got a customer running a little NT/95-98 network, and I set the server up with a proxy software so they can all access the internet through the server's modem. When you launch IE5 from any of the WIN98 clients, IE times out before the server can dial out and establish a connection, but they have one machine running 95 and IE 4.01, and it does not time out....does anybody know if there is a way to set a time out value for IE5?....once the server is connected to the net, you can browse fine from any machine, just it would be nice if they didn't have to launch IE, than hit the refresh once the server was connected!

Well I'm not sure about the timeout function... But does the proxy server have some sort of keep alive ping process that you could use maybe? Of course this would mean the connection would never go down.

yeah, you can keep the connection up, but they had me set it to disconnect after 5 minutes innactivity because it is on the fax line, so they don't want to tie the line up all day.

I've also considered changing the IE timeout value when setting up internet sharing with Wingate. When a machine requests the internet connection the Wingate server begins dialing, but IE always times out before the connection can be established. This results in users complaining that their internet doesn't work, even though all they need to do is click the refresh button. There really should be a registry value or something containing the timeout value.

Here is an idea I heard once, but I don't know if it works: In TCP/IP settings, "DNS Configuration" tab - for each IP that is added in "DNS Server Search Order", 30 seconds is added before a timeout occurs. So, for example, if you add your primary DNS to the DNS server search order 3 times, you should have a 90-second timeout.

Like I said, I haven't tested this but it was once suggested to me as a fix for this problem.

You might try reading through this article:

It lists all TCP/IP settings that can be customized in the registry. There are a few references to timeout values.

I have the same problem with three machines running win98 and i-share 3.5 two of the machines connect no problem but one machine times out before the connectioc is established, Steve I am going to try that registry tweak next tuesday when they are open again and see what happens, will let you know Bob
