Thumbs up Which slot do you want to work?

Taken from responses tylerclark Video Adapters/Monitor.."How are you doing on this? It is likely the problem is that the drivers for the ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x are not available for the multiple monitors support..the best that I have done is to use the Atir3 ATI enhanced drivers that come with Windows 98.. in this case I was able to get the program running; however producing unusual graphics including two cursors as one left the screen on one side the other came onto the monitor on the other side and identify produced the 2 on the only working monitor. It is likely that the information to initialiize is not given on the second monitor in this case..The solution is to ask the manufacturer to give you the drivers that will work. If you are successful contact me somehow; I would be very interested to see what you have gotten from them and would like to try it on mine...."wdde's and salutations to them and you" I know multiple monitors work with the ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x, so during your phone call feel free to mention my quotes above.

Also taken from responses to tylerclark Tech toTech.. "Can someone explain pci boot up as ""I knew it should work""; as I mentioned in Video Adapter/Monitor.. forum. And I am very sure the slot makes absolutely no difference.
The dates and times confirm my credibility on this issue. I still contend the slot makes absolutely no difference and have no objections to being contacted as to what I can do to resolve my problem..anyone willing to give it a try. It is quite posible that the IRQ may be configured differently, but I haven't the background, any help on configuration then. I know it is a new area, but I have had multiple monitors before visavis someone who has the expertise, please help.

Good Repsonse. I must point out that on some boards , the PCI slots had static IRQS assigned to them so to try to allieviate the problems that Win9x has with some Plug n Pray devices. Lately though board manufacturers have strated to generalise the reassignment of IRQS via the BIOS. I have a similar problem ( which isn't a problem really )of my SB Live & Diamond V550 using the same IRQ which cannot be changed without moving the sound card down a slot.

Also worth mentioning is that on boards with 5 PCI slots or more on them, the first , fifth and any subsequent slots share the same IRQ as the AGP slot by default, which also for some reason are not bus mastered !!!!???

My own findings, backed up by other sites.

    Thumbs up

Darren you are quite smart really and I take any adverse comments I may have posted, back!

All I have to say is go searching at Microsoft for information on the MS routing table and you will find loads of info about why certain slots can be busmastering and must use or assign certain IRQ's and generally why hardware detect doesn't work too well once you have more than a couple of devices, and why manufacturers can't write good drivers to do this.

All I have to say is what the hell was wrong with jumpers!

So, maybe there is no problem except the drivers. I say this with one question in mind, do you think there is anything to gain as my AGP is interupt request 5 (under device manager devices by connection, resources) and my PCI is interupt request 9, furthermore my modem is 10 and my sound is 11; standard arrangement comm1 (4) and comm2 (3)modem. And not trying to be stupid or sound stupid, am I trying to get the PCI video into a lower interupt request position as the AGP video (5) or does it seem to be in the right place now, as it precedes the modem and the sound devices at this time. I have tried to switch the two as they are similar chips (had nothing to lose), but defaulted back as it corrected the mess that I was in at the time (essentially went back to 5 and 9, after I switched them).

I truly do not know what slot it is in at the time, I plugged it into an available PCI which I felt comfortable using I will take it to heart that it could be sharing with the AGP; although that would be extremely unusual to have gotten the program even to run and set up as far as it has..because I have seen them with no sign of the second monitor and brought all the way to working order. I have never seen the slot make a difference in getting multiple monitors initiated (which is far easier to say then to do, as it "IS" a monumental task to get them initiiated). Just hoping I will recall what I have to do at some point and get this working as I have been trying to get this initiated for about 8 months now..do not want to get involved in long distance telephone calls and feel someone must have the expertise...

ok a few pointers to multimonitor setup under 98.

cards must be either AGP or PCI as ISA/VLB cards are not supported.

all cards must be using either WDM ( windows driver module ) or drivers specifically written for windows 98. A full list of these cards ( at time of Windows 98 being pressed to cd can be found in the Windows help files ).

A lot of video card chipsets nowadays require a seperate IRQ to be allocated to them to work in anything other than 640x480x16 colours.

I have found the best combination is to use the AGP as primary display ( monitor 1 ) and to use the dated S3 Virge 325DX chipset based cards as the other cards. This setup has worked 100% for me .

    Just a couple of ideas.

    Exclamation

BTW thank you; I think I have some ideas from what is said about sound boards and video boards and IRQs, just waiting it out till I feel like looking in there and putting some of this stuff to practice.
