New ghost drive
At the shop I work at we are currently redoing our ghost drive for new builds and I was just wondering what everyone thinks are the absolutly required programs for a system to make it the most useful, or the best games demos, or whatever just makes it a better experience for the end user. Note, all programs must be shareware or freeware and should not time out after a certain amount of time.

Lysergic,
I would suggest that you surf over to:
http://www.nonags.com
This a site which offers a LOT of excellent freeware and shareware. They virus-scan their site frequently and test every app. This is a super site run by a guy who is dedicated like Scott.
Below are some others.
http://www.rocketdownload.com
This site has both freeware and shareware.
http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com
All freeware
http://www.netmag.co.uk/
Internet related freeware and shareware.
These will give you a huge selection to choose from. All give descriptions and reviews of the apps.
You can also go to:
http://www.altavista.com
and download their free ISP software. This is kind of a pain with the ad window, but it works pretty well and is as fast as most other ISPs, much better than Net Zero. And... it's free!

if you want to give away something a little special ( and this can make the sale if the customer is a little edgy ) is to supply Lotus Smartsuite 97 with the system. In the UK, it was given away on cover mounted CD's on nearly every PC magazine you could think of!!!! I don't know if it is the same in the States or not, but thought it might be worth a mention even though it is a pile of crap really ( but the customer thinks they are getting a bargain )

Things to definately include in your systems are: WinZip am must. WinAmp for listening pleasure, ICQ 99b to keep in touch, and an assortment of card games and little junk...

Can not due the Smartsuite. They still charge for it over here. We offer it as an addon and for $30 is not too bad when compared to MS Office. We are currently checking with Sun on the proceedures on offering StarOffice. Also have added Gimp for windows for graphics. For a free program it is pretty impressive. Instead of WinAmp we use sonique plus musicmatch jukebox. Then we have the standards like winzip, aseedc, AOL, Netscape, ICQ, yahoo pager, AIM, real player, quicktime, adobe reader. For games stuff like Riase of the Triad, Doom, Forsaken. Any other little gems?
