problems with network games

Im running a tbird 900, win 2000 pro, pc133 218Mb, 30Gig 5400rpm hdd NTFS, nvidia g4 mx 64Mb, 3Com 10/100 nic. When ever i play Half-kife over a lan or on an internet game my computer restarts with warning after approx. 30 min of playing. This has been happening for a short time now and i have downloaded the latest hl patches and updates along with the newest drivers for my system. Yet it still restarts in the middle of a game. Nobody seems to know why this is happening. Can anybody help? Thanks

I'd suspect Power supply or CPU overheating. Especially since it's happening when playing 3d games.

Besides that, it could be videocard's fan stopped - GF videocard is running hot. Check it also.

a firend told me he thought my cpu might be running to hot also. I bought a new larger case (my previous was to cramped) and put 4 case fans in plus my cpu is running a volcano7 heatsink and fan. this didnt help. thanks

Just an update to this (I'm one of his friends who's been trying to help): We are now getting all sorts of wonderful varied BSODs <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> . Most seem to be STOP: 0x0A ones, but we did get a 0x50 (PAGE_FAULT_IN_UNPAGED_AREA) and another that I've forgotten.

Also, I don't think my friend mentioned this, but his HD had some bad sectors around the middle of the disk, and we simply paritioned the drive around that space. Could his drive be going out or something similar? He just ran a CHKDSK /F /R scan and it found nothing wrong. Should we try to do a surface scan? His drive is NTFS. Will this affect anything?

If it doesnt give this or something similar it will just freeze solid and I'll have to push the reset button on my case. I've downloaded the latest patches and upgrades, plus the latest drivers and all of the Windows updates and patches. Yet it still proceeds to do this during any multiplayer game. Can anybody help me with this problem?

I just remembered what that *other* BSOD was. It gave a "STOP 0x0000004E PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" BSOD.

I've been searching about these BSODs and it seems like a lot of them have to do with I/O and faulty/buggy drivers. Any thoughts?

It is Clearly that the HDD is the cause of the problem.
It might be the controller too.

Don't leave a faulty Disk on your system - you can never know when it will hit you.
Replace the disk Pronto.

Thanks Gabriel. I was thinking along the same lines, as the drives (CD-ROM, DVD, HDD, etc.) are the ONLY things common to all his recent computers and this happened on ALL of them.

Thanks again. I'm not sure he'll really want to fork out the cash, but I'm sure he will when I tell him that he'll be able to play Half-Life without crashing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

To anyone who has read this recently. We have solved the problem, it was the network card. I swaped it out for a diff card i had laying around and this took care of the problem.
