    Post Where did Windows go???

Hello, I just made the jump to Linux and I must say I've never felt this lost since 3.1. But I digress.

The problem I have is that when the computer boots up I get the boot manager. But I only get once choice - Linux. What must I do to get Windows to show up??

    Thanks much!!!

The first question I have, is when you set up Linux, did you tell it to just use free space or use entire partition?

I told it to use the entire partition.

    But...

    Windows is on HD0
    Linux was installed on HD1

So Windows should of remained untouched, or was it?????

One way to see what has happened is to use your windows bootdisk, assuming 95/98/Me and see if you can see the contents of HDD0. If you are able to see the contents of the drive it may still be able to be recovered

That's not possible because HD0 is NTFS.

I assume you were running 2000/XP, if so you can try booting from your cd and go into the repair console and you should be able to use that to fix your bootsector, you may need to reload Linux again after but there is still hope about recovering your windows partition.

When I install Linux, should it automatically detect Windows, or must I do something??

Each time i have installed it (and it has been a few different times) it has always detected windows and set up the LILO bootmanager to give access to both OS's

fdisk /mbr did the trick. I'm back in familiar Microsoft territories but now I can't access Linux. I'll have to play with it tomorrow.

You will need a boot manager, like LILO, or Grub.

I've used both Lilo and Grub but Windows never shows up as an option only Linux. Is there something I need to do while I'm installing Linux???
