    Post networking 2 machines?

I have 2 machines, one a 500 K62 and one a pentium 133. I want to network them for DSL sharing. One problem, i cant get it to work, do i need to have a hub inbetween the machines? someone told me that and i dont know if there is any merit to it. so here is what i have,
    • umpteen million feet of network cable
      4 network cards
a hub, with no power supply
      2 computers
      and a DSL modem
      oh yah, all in win98

    thanx guys, much appreciated again

With 2 machines you can use either a hub, or a crossover cable, but with a crossover cable one of the machines will require 2 NIC's. Then there is the issue of sharing the connection. There are many different ways to do this - both software and hardware based. Do a search of the forums for Internet or DSL sharing, the topis has been covered quite a bit. Here is one that might help.

Also, go <a href="http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/win98se/intro.htm" target ="_blank">here</a> for a lot of info.

    Hope this helps.

I recommend getting a Linksys router. If you plan to hook up more computers get the 4 or 8 port version, otherwise get 2 port. If you can get the hub working, you MAY be able to get the 1 port version and uplink the hub (that just means plugging the hub into the uplink port on the router), but I've never tried it so don't hold me to that...

There is another good program called ishare. It's simple to use. If you have a server based network you can go expensive with MS Proxy Server. Great little program with very little troubles on a small network. Winproxy is a b*tch to get working and doesn't work that great once you do. My experience anyhow.

Myself, buy the router. They're fairly cheap and very easy to setup

Then, if you have any plans or needs to expand in the future, just add hubs!

    My 2 cents!

I think you can get up to 5 IP's, unless you have the crappy Nortel modem you can only get two. Glad to hear it worked for you!

Um I dont remember ever seeing anything about a 2 port router on the linksys site

    I do remember seeing a 1 port, a 4 port and an 8 port.
