Dos Compatability Mode, WTF?
Ok..
Here's the specs
AMD K6/2 500
FIC 503+ with VIA chipsets...
2 harddrives
4.3 and a 1.6
4.3 is partitioned 2 times..
When it boots up All the drives are in DOS COMPATIABILTY MODE
NO CDROMS unless i load the dos drivers and mscdex.
I loaded the newest 4in1 drivers from VIA...
BTW i REM'd out all the stuff in the config.sys and the autoexec.bat to see if that changed anything.. It didnt.
Any ideas?

Run a virus check.
remove IDE controller
reboot, and install proper IDE drivers.
DOS compatability mode is just that, something is stopping the IDE busmaster drivers from loading. Could be a virus, corrupted driver, wrong drivers, or a hardware problem with the IDE.

There is also that "NOIDE" that magically appears in the registry. Its not a bad idea to make that part of your troubleshooting, and get rid of it. It has saved me alot of headaches.

Larommi is correct. NOIDE in the registry will kick your tail. I have found that when the system has a problem such as the one described, NOIDE will show up in the reg. If you do not remove it, the problem will not go away. It is a simple procedure. Run regedit, search for NOIDE. When it shows up, delete it.
