    Question autoscan in win98se

I have an HD (WD) that apparently has a problem. It will not run scandisk at the startup of winduhs. A DOS virus scan has been running for over 15 hours (20GB). "DOS" scandisk will not run. WD diags found an error but "corrected it". Still won't run. I installed a new hd to check the rest of the system, and everything else works fine. As soon as I install the original hd as a slave, winduhs wants to run scan disk. the system locks at this point and nothing occurs. I would simply like to stop the scan from running, boot the stupid thing, and transfer the needed files onto the new hd. Any thoughts on how to prevent scandisk from automatically running when booting???
    thanks

    hey dude.
if this is windows 98 (SE or a), run msconfig in safe mode and uncheck the scandisk option under advanced options if possible. if not, run ontrack disk diag to check if the hdd is actually bad. If all fails do a backup through dos.

I am running 98SE. The probelmo is that as soon as it boots, it wants to run scandisk, in either safe mode or normal. WD's ontrack found a problem, but "fixed it". Still no workie!! I would prefer to simply drag over the customers files in winduhs, but it looks like DOS will be the answer unless another Guru chimes in.

well, i guess if you can't get into windows at all then installing tweakUI is out of the question....i suppose you could try renaming scandisk, but i'm not sure what kind of error you'll get.

I HAVE THIS PROBLEM ALL THE TIME AT WORK AND THE BEST OPTION IS TO USE A PROGRAM CALLED GHOST.. CREATE A PARTITION ON YOUR NEW HD AND THE COPY THE OLD HARD DRIVE TO THE NEW ONE. IN 10 MINS EVERYTHING IS OK.

BEWARE, GET IT THE WRING WAY AROUND AND BAMMM A BLANK HD

try this, as soon as scandisk comes up, cancel it....in win95, hit "x". you have to hit enter after "x" the anykey to load windows.

win win 98, hit enter as soon as it comes up, that will cancel and start loading windows.

give that a try and let us know how it works.

    Cool

Thanks for all your suggestions. When I disabled the scandisk in startup, it stopped the operation and let winduhs boot. Apparently, the WD HD has a serious problem, but the WD tests and diags does not pick it up. When attaching the old drive as a secondary, it causes conflicts on the primary IDE adapter. You can copy over some files to the new drive, other just lock everything up. Oh well!! New WD drive fixed all the problems.
