Thanks for all your suggestions. When I disabled the scandisk in startup, it stopped the operation and let winduhs boot. Apparently, the WD HD has a serious problem, but the WD tests and diags does not pick it up. When attaching the old drive as a secondary, it causes conflicts on the primary IDE adapter. You can copy over some files to the new drive, other just lock everything up. Oh well!! New WD drive fixed all the problems.
