Strange Sound Problem
Help, this one has me stumped. I'm working on a system, that shows the sound card installed and working properly in device manager (orginally ess1869, I changed to SB Ensonic PCI) however, in multimedia it says "no sound device installed". The system will not play any sounds. I've checked for virus, changed the sound card, cleaned the registry, uninstalled and reinstalled all multimedia items in windows setup. Still no sound - otherwise system works fine.
Celeron 333
64MB Ram
4GB HD
4MB Video
(now SB Ensonic Sound)

If it's the Creative Labs PCI 64 with the Ensoniq chip, there is only one way I know of. Download the 17 MB setup file. The Chip is number 1370, I believe. I had big trouble with this card, too. The drivers are here on this site under Ensoniq. I hope you have a fast internet connection. http://www.windrivers.com/scripts/dr...370/137095.exe
Good Luck,

It's not the soundcard (I use this card often, no problems), it was doing the same with the other card. The system loads the drivers, says it is working in device manager. In control panel, under multimedia devices it shows the mixer and all components installed and working, however under "playback and record" it shows no sound devices installed! It is grayed out with no options!
This has really got me stumped, I've never seen this situation before.
PS: AlienDyne - I'm caught in your comment under Tech Tales, The family tech-support guy
"Fixing friends' or relatives' computers is a nightmare sometimes.
I can fix a computer in a few minutes, no matter what the problem is. When it comes to a relative's or friend's one, it can take hours, days or can't be fixed! Coincidence, bad luck??? Who knows?"
It was a cry for help from one of my wife's friends, and of course I'm stumped!! lol

you may want to check your irq's, sounds like a conflict to me, I had a similiar problem and found that if I had my nic card installed it shared the irq for the sound...no nic...i have sound....go figure...oh, it took me 2 weeks to figure out and it was a favor for my sister....imagine that huh? good luck

You have probably tried all these but just a refresher: Safe Mode, kill sound and multimedia devices. Swap slots. See if you can force IRQ in bios. See if it has latest bios flash.
I was working on a machine last week with similar problem - pci sound on AOpen AX-59 pro. I could not see the conflict but knew it was there. I could not force IRQ 5 on the slot untill I flashed bios.
The 1869 was ISA? Could be that it was actually bad and the SB has a conflict. I hate working on family machines!!

Yes, I've already tried all of that, I can't find an IRQ conflict anywhere, in fact he still has a couple of free IRQs. The problem start while his son was online chatting according to them "the system crashed". When they rebooted the system came up with video in 16 color mode only (fixed that by removing drivers and reinstalling) and also the system had no sound. That's where I'm at now -- I'll be going back tonight to see if I can find anything or just have to wipe it and start over.
Thanks for the input.

You might try run System File Checker dude. Maybe the system crash corrupted some system files dealing with the sound. Just an idea

Check in the MultiMedia applet in Control Panel. The tab all the way to the right that says Devices should list your active sound drivers. I've rarely but occasionally seen Win9x systems that had sound devices listed as working in Device Manager but that had no drivers loaded in the Multimedia applet. This goes double for NT systems, where you have to load the sound drivers manually in the Multimedia applet.

Add/remove the multi media portion ow windows and reboot, re-install it and reboot again. It's saved me headaches in the past.
