"No Operating system found"
I have a 550MHZ, 20 GB gateway PC. It's about a year old and I've previously formatted the hard drive. On occasion, I get a No Operating system found message and the PC doesnt' boot. If I turn off the PC and turn it on again, it loads windows 98 with no problems. Is anyone familiar with this problem, and if so, any suggestions.

Sounds like the Hard Disk could be going bad or the BIOS not recognising the HDD correctly initially.

When I used to do service for Gateway, they always gave us a cable with the harddrive we were replacing so check reseat both ends of the cable and run scandisk and test the whole disk just in case. More than likely it could be the drive but it could be ther harddrive controller so reseat the card for the controller if there is one.

my vote is on a partiton table going bad, bios probs or maybe a bad drive/cable

try increasing the Hard Disk Pre-delay setting in the BIOS. The hdd could be taking a long time to spin up and initialize, which would mean that it would not be detected.
