WordPerfect 8 and Spellcheck
Just a quickie here, I hope. Corel WordPerfect 8 is installed on a Windows 98 box. It used to work fine. Suddenly (and of course, the user did "nothing") the spell checker stopped working. When you try to invoke the spell check on a document, an error window pops up that says:
WPWin Error [That's the title]
Writing Tools internal error
And the only thing you can do is click Ok.
Now...
A few days ago, the office manager tried to uninstall WordPerfect and reinstall it, at which point WPWIN8 would cause a fatal exception. When I went out today, I uninstalled it, and also deleted the files left over, AND renamed the WPWIZDLL.DLL to WPWIZDLL.DL0. Then I installed WordPerfect, selecting a COMPLETE install.
Guess what? WordPerfect works fine, but the spellcheck is back to that error.
Any ideas? These people are 20 miles away and accross a toll bridge, so if I could just take some suggestions with me and make it work on one trip, that would be phenomenal (-:

Try renaming the user word list (WT8US.UWL) and restarting the app.

Performing a file search for WT8US.UWL turned up no files at all. On a hunch, I tried WP8US.UWL, but that came up dry too. Single drive system, WP8 is installed to the default directory.
Any others? Thanks, by the way, DA (-:

Don't know if this applies to WP8, but this works in 7. In the corel\office7\shared\pfit7 folder there is a file, PFREG.EXE. Run it and you get a dialog box with a Register button. Click register and this "registers PerfectFit components (spell check) with Win95/98." You can also copy the pift7 dir off the WP cd into the shared dir and try it that way.
This should have happened when you killied and reinstalled the app but maybe it didn't happen.
Hope this helps...

Nope, sorry, but there's no such folder, and a Find turns up no such file.
We're getting close, I can feel it (-:

Actually, we did find the WPREG.EXE, and ran it according to Corel's instructions, but it didn't work. I'm headed over there this afternoon to try something else that Corel suggested but that I don't feel very confident talking this woman through over the phone.
I'll let you know how it went (-;

Have you applied any service packs that Corel may have on their page?

OK, let's recap.
I ran the PFREG routine and the problem persisted. Corel then said to delete the Programs folder (c:\corel\suite8\programs) in its entirety, then to copy the programs folder from the CD, run PFREG and unregister and then reregister the programs for WordPerfect. That didn't work.
Next, I downloaded SP7 (they had SP3 applied) and applied it. That didn't work.
Next, Corel sent me a program called CLEAN8.exe which was supposed to clean the system of any trace of WordPerfect ever having been on the system at all. So...I uninstalled it, rebooted. Ran CLEAN8.exe, removed everything, rebooted. Installed the complete package from scratch, rebooted. Installed SP7, rebooted. Tried the spellcheck...and the damn thing still doesn't work!!!
That's where it sits. I think they're gonna send the Canadian Mounties in next. (-;
If anyone has any more suggestions, let me have them. The next thing I would try is to either upgrade to WordPerfect Office 2000 (which they have, but if it still doesn't work, I have no more support options), or a complete reinstall of Windows 98 (from a wiped system).
Whatcha think?

Before wiping it I would bring the machine back to the office and load 98 over itself (don't like to do that onsite.)
You could also try running SFC.
If that didn't work I would wipe it and reload.
Sorry the register file didn't work for you...
