Post windows 2000 Lockups

Been having my computer lockup during games, and now it locked up while watching a trailer for a movie I downloaded. When I say lockup I mean it locks up tight, no mouse response, no keyboard response, all I can do is hit the rest button.

I started noticing it about a month ago in Jedi Knight outcase, at that time I just thought that it was because of my cd rom drive. It was slowy dieing Was having troubles reading cds. Well I finally replaced the cd rom drive with a cd burner and now it seems that any game I play now I am garateed a lockup and now I has happened while watching a movie. I was thinking last week that it had to be a heat issue because it was pretty warm in the room that the computer is located. also because I had updated all of the drives, scandisk, defrag, AVscan, Directx reinstalled, windows update, unhook new cd burnner. check all cables. and now I am Out of idea. Try pulling the video card and reseating it. The weather is getting hot and humid, sometimes connections come loose. Make sure the fan on the video card is running properly.

I just did a service with computer lockups. Turned out hd was failing.

Suggest you download powermax and put it on a bootable disk from www.maxtor.com

Do both quick and comprehensive tests.

Power supply????

What kind do you have and how many watts???

Virus???

Did you try the lastest via 4in 1 ver. 4.40 chipset patch from www.viaarena.com

Memory???

Software related issues???

Junky Abit motheroard??

Well I think I may have found my problem, Bad Sound card. Took out the sound card and installed a different one, and so far no lockups.

Thanks for the Ideas, they were very helpful.

I didn't even consider the soundcard.
Silly me.

may updated drivers for it might correct the lockup issues as well if it is reused again.
