Spinning Blue LED fan mod!

I've seen that before..a while back...but it was too complex...I might try it after I get my 120mm fans a rocking.

I was thinking about doing that but none of my fans are normally visible to it wouldn't be that big of a deal for me.

Like they mentioned, I think it would be a sweet addition to the PS fan. Spice up that otherwise a$$ ugly backend.

Its definetly a sweet modding idea...and with a little work, it can be done. Not something you would want to do a hundred of...

Very doable. Looking at the directions it makes since, but were does the spring come from. The fan I had did not have a spring but it is not the first time I have taken it apart maybe I lost it the first time.

I took apart two different fans that I had laying around and neither had this spring in it. I don't see a way to do this mod without that spring.

How would you deal with the power supply? Surely the power leads would twist and break.

I substituted the spring from a clicky pen. Fits perfectly around the little pole and puts just enough tension on the whole works to keep contact with the bearing in the motor.

This just might work!!!!

have you every seen or played with the Electric Slot Car Race Sets, or even train sets it looks like it would work with the same concept, the way I see it.

OK - I have a working prototype - here are some pics:


Magnet and blades all wired up


First LED soldered in place. I did the soldering outside the fan instead of inside like they did. This worked out much better I think. It would have been pretty hard to solder in a confined area like that and it would be difficult to make sure nothing shorts once the fan is back together.


Fan reassembled - still needs light wiring.


Light wires attached. I ran seperate wires to the lights so I didn't have to bother with resistors for now.


The money shot: in action in the dark.

I used one red and one green LED from the front of an old case. I thought two different colors might look cool, but it doesn't so much. Blue LEDs will definately look nicer, but I didn't want to waste them on a prototype.

The fan vibrates a little bit, and it's knocking my "brush" off the magnet a bit. You can see the light flickering in the last pic. I didn't have any little spring clip or anything laying around, so I used a paper clip in place. This isn't working very well. The paper clip makes tons of noise and pushes too hard on the magnet, making it difficult for the fan to turn at full speed.

It needs a little tweaking, but this is one sweet mod. Very unique for sure.
