I have tried a generic optical and an M$, the generic has been given away, the M$ will not be replaced.

Ah, thanks for the info, I wondered what was causing that...

Back to the Main question - I received an Ms Optical Intellimouse free from a supplier and quite like them. I found it quite easy adjusting to the speed difference, and the ride is much smoother as they say.

Logitec are good, solid products also, so take your pick.

I personally like my MS optical mouse. It feels better than the logitec optical to me. My hand does get sore faster on either mouse though so I still like my logitech trackball for gaming.

Yes it is faster in usb mode, but If you boot into safe mode you will have to remember the key strokes to get around windows.

I have just about every mouse that M$ makes and I can't tout them enough over the competition though kensington mouse in a box was pretty good for a while. It's the one thing they really got right.

The optical mouse is nice but it's still not a fine of a precision as the ones that still use the ball. I have found the the M$ scroll mouse to be very nice for my photo editing and fine/precision work. The intelimouse explorer with 4 buttons and a wheel is wonderful for general computing but I have found that it is still a little "jerky" when doing precision work on graphics and whatnot. No cleaning the thing all the time is really great though.

About USB mice - don't expect to use them when installing the OS. Only 2000 has ever picked up the USB mouse from the get go and it was still not functional until I had the OS fully installed. 98 did not even recognise the USB mouse's presence.

During installation, I usually just use the USB to PS/2 adapter until installation is complete.
