    Post AAARRRRRGHHH! BROKE MY TBIRD!

I tried a new heatsink the otherday and after it didnt do any better I put my original back on. after words my temps were high at idle and sky rocket instantly under load. goes from 105f to 160f in 5 secs when I start pinball in w2k! I pulled heatsink off and found the corner broke off the core. it still works but gets hot fast. any ideas?

T-birds are becoming notorious for breaking small pieces off due to the high amount of force used to put on and take off heat sinks. Eventually you will start to get lots of errors and eventually it will fail to work completely. My advice would be to get a new chip, its better than having a fire and destroying more parts.

you could always try using a high quality heat transfer paste like arctic silver to help fill the gap.

    Replace the Chip
Buy Golden Orb (The BEST!!! Not the Cheapest).

The Copper Orb is better than the Golden Orb or Volcano. But for superior cooling without breaking the bank try a Global Win fop32 or the rather loud fop38 or CAK38.

I heard the orbs sucked too, except the dragon 3 orb, also I fixed my Tbird! the blue stuff seemes to be a sealant. Now that the sealant is gone in a spot I think too much heat escapes the sides of the core since it doesnt touch any heatsink. so... I wanted to seal the spot good, JB weld it! I spread JB weld all the way around the edge of the core, it works and doesnt get hot anymore, in fact its cooler???? I think the JB weld acts as a insulator sending all heat upwards to the heatsink. only theory I can come up with.

Oh I know, I read those stories and thought "yeah, right" but last night before fix id be idle at 105f and now after the fix 89f! before the chip broke I always had 95f idle temps. how the JB is helping exactly im not sure but it is and I have been using my computer all day at cooler temps then before the whole incident started. I think ill try ame thing on a duron and see if the temps drop any.
