Upgrade Opinions please....
Hi, always been an intel man (don't shoot me), I've decided it's time to upgrade my current system and here's what I have to choose from..
Intel P4 478 1800mhz
Intel 845D Mobo
-or-
AMD XP 1800+
KT266A 133 Mobo
Questions are as follows, if I go down the AMD route, do I install the 4in1 drivers like I would the chipset inf update from intel? I'm thinking of the dragon ORB 3 in either 7000rpm or 4900rpm model how much difference would I expect from cooling and noise? I will be using WINXP with CL Audigy soundcard and CL GF3
any advice or no-no's, or do I play safe and go for the intel setup?
Cheers.

That's a bad question to ask aro8und here.
I'd say go with what you want the the cheap one maybe.
They will both be good descisions.

what can you afford??
either system will rock, the AMD system is probably substancially cheaper. The P4 will give you a little more future because of software that will be optimized for the P4.
It's an apple or oranges comparison. Both are quite tasty. It just depends what you are in the mood for.

Go AMD and save yourself some cash. I dont think the 4 in 1 driver needs to be applied in sequence like the P4 inf's do, but it can't hurt. Can't help with the fan noise, but cooling is nothing you want to skimp on with either chip, if you want it to last years.. A lillte knowledge, common sense, and these forums are all you neeed to build/repair/troubleshoot any problems you might have.......

AMD is perfectly safe anymore. They haven't had compatability problems for the longest time, afaik. The 4in1 are just VIA drivers, and you have to install them on VIA based Intel boards, too. It's just a driver set for the chipset's IDE, AGP, etc. stuff. Jeez... people seem to think that the 4in1's are some sort of secret AMD mojo. The fact remains, they are both x86 processors, built to run very fast, on good chipsets any more. The real differences are in price and preference. If you want games, I'd recommend AMD. If you want media apps and only play Q3, go Intel. Either way, it's a very similar process. Although, the XP1800+ will run faster than the P4 1800 in most tests, including office apps. Don't know how fast you need Word to run, but... eh
And as for the fans, I don't know much about the orb. If you have good case ventilation/circulation, you could probably get by with the 4900, and that will be a LOT quieter. Hope some of that helped ya...

you'll be happy either way. just make sure you buy good name brand stuff (motherboard, ram, modem, hard drive) to put in your machine. good luck
