AMD751/756+AGP=what?
Is anyone here succesfully using an AGP video card with an AMD 751/756 or even 761/766 chipset?
"ESPECIALLY" with Windows NT. Im concerned that my mobo (shuttle AI61 w/ 751/756 chipset) isnt going to support my GeForce2 AGP card in Windows NT SP4. Consider the following from AMD downloads:
Release Date
AMD Driver Pack, Version 1.30 Download Now! May. 2001
---------------------------------------------------------
"AMD AGP Miniport Driver is not supported in Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0."
I know Windows 95 dont support AGP...but, Windows NT SP4 is supposed to support AGP.
Im also getting negative feedback about the AMD 7XX chipsets cooperating with the AGP port with any OS. Some say it wont go into X2.

NT4 is going out. Why would you try to put a gaming-oriented card in it? Sorry, but your only choice is to move to Win2000 or Win98. The card will work, but you won't have access the the nice AGP features. It'll be a fast PCI card essentially. Which may be all you need.
And the AGP Miniport works perfectly with my Epox 8k7A+. Just make sure you install it BEFORE the video drivers.

Well....It is an approved card for Solid Works (a 3D modeling package), which was my first concern.
Its cheaper than the Elsa Cards. And would run games on dual boot OS. NT is a supported OS for most CAD apps.
When you say "it will be a fast PCI card"....does that mean the AGP port "CAN NOT BE USED PROPERLY WITH ANY OS?" By that I mean X2 AGP.
Thanks for your reply!

I have run an Asus K7M which is based on the AMD 750 chipset with several AGP cards ranging from an ATI Rage IIc to an nVidia Quardo2. All cards have worked perfectly although I was working mainly with Windows 2000 SP1. NT4 does not suppor the AGP spec so the card is really just an expensive PCI card when used in conjuction with this OS. As for the chipset and AGP cards though, you should be OK. Just be sure you have the latest drivers.

I think what im hearing is..."Get a New OS!"
This makes sense to me...thanks for the 751/756 feedback. Im thinking of Going straight to Windows XP Pro. I may Dual Boot with 98SE for Good Game support.
Whats a good AMD chipset for future reference?
Im most concerned about compatibility with OS and Driver support.

AMD has exited the chipset market but they left behind the AMD 761 chipset, which is great. However the new KT266a is out, which is supposed to be fast and stable.

WinXP is a great choice, and as far as dual booting with Win98, unless you play a few really old games, XP should run pretty much anything you throw at it. Most DOS based games of course won't run, but other then that, the only thing I've run into problems with is the EA Need For Speed series. Give gaming on XP a try, you just might be surprised.

Ill try it when I get it. I may never get it cause nobody will answer my XP post. I dont know if i should get upgrade or full. I own NT install disk, but dont like to "upgrade" a current install.
If ME is the last OS of its kind, and NT hasnt been a good gaming OS...Im thinking games "MIGHT" run better on 98. Of course I reserve the right to be wrong. Games written to run "best" in 95 may not like the NT model.

Well...I got XP Pro (ugrade) and installed well.
However...I still cant get my AGP port opperating properly. My WinFox utility is indicating AGP X1.
Its supposed to be able to do X2...according to the Shuttle documentation. Not to mention that Quake II "timerefresh" @480X640 is 60fps. Thats with a GeForce2MX400 and an Athlon 750. My old Pentium I w/EDO memory (VooDoo3 equiped) does 100fps. I tried the XP drivers first. I D/Ld the latest nVidia drivers too. Then I tried the latest AGP miniport drivers from AMDs website.
They were released in May of 2001. No help there.
In fact...I dont know anyone who has said "I got my AGP port running X2 on a 751/756 chipset".
I have heard some "Irongate/AGP" contraversy though. Im still glad I bought XP...just wish it would have helped me with that one issue.

Just so you know I used to run my Geforce2 MX400 64MB AGP card on my own Shuttle AI61 for quite some time and it worked fine. Also, a friend of mine bought that board from me and he, also, is running a Geforce on it. The only thing that sucks is it doesn't support 4X AGP but didn't make much of a difference

Dohhh! Now im frustrated.
If I cant find the bug...is there a utility or something that can?
P.S. consider this quote from Toms Hardware Page:
"My AGP-testing has pretty much shown that all graphics cards I've tested only run at AGP1x on Irongate platforms, which seems to be due to instability issues of AMD750 running at AGP2x."
Am I facing this issue?...I do have the bios update that contains "Super Bypass Mode".
