quick question

does a xp1600+ run at a 1050 clockspeed?

This is what is coming up on the bios of a computer at work. Just wondering if its correct.

Does your board state it supports the XP chip? have you looked for a BIOS update? an XP 1600 should not show up as a 1050, as it should run at 1.4gig if i remember correctly.

The XP1600+ processor runs at 1333. If you can't set it to run at 1333Mhz, then probably the motherboard does not support this chip. A BIOS upgrade would help.

Oops, my mistake, but im sure thats what the XP1500's run at... oh well we live and learn

Correct me if I'm wrong but an xp1500 runs at 1.33Mhz and the xp 1600 is 1.4MHz.

If the machine posts 1050 then the bios settings are wrong.

Your machine is using the wrong FSB in bios, it can get these from memory speed(or you set them wrong-should be 10.5 x133), so what kind of Ram? you want ddr pc2100 (which effectively runs at 266Mhz, 133 in and 133 out, two memory fetches) or better for max performace. FSB should be 133.

If its a 133 based board then pc133 memory is okay you just get half the memory bandwith (much slower-why people want ddr).

I see that AMD's 'True performance initative' is doing its intended function and confusing the hell out of everyone.

Confus-ed is right. You need to check if there's a jumper that sets the FSB from 100 to 133. This is the most common solution.

I've found that if the board doesnt detect it as an XP CPU, it tends to be hotter than it should be, so i would watch out....

I'm going to assume that the board you are using supports Athlon XP processors. If that's the case, then the only problem you have if your FSB is set to 100 (100*10.5 = 1050) and should be set at 133 (133*10.5 = 1396) find the jumper on the motherboard or soft bios setting and change it.

But MAKE SURE that your board and bios support both the Athlon XP and 133mhz FSB. Otherwise, you could be in big trouble.

The one thing you should check right away is the voltage for your proc. If your MB doesn't detect it as an XP, chances are it has applied the wrong voltage settings. Like Garak said, you may be looking at having some issues related to heat. The voltage for that proc should be 1.75V.

I had the same problem with my ABIT KG7-RAID before I upgraded the BIOS.

You need to set the jumper that will distinguish between 100mhz FSB processors and 133mhz FSB processors. If your motherboard only supports 100mhz FSB processors then you're out of luck (of course the system will still run just not at the intended clock speed)
