[RESOLVED] Overclock my Athlon

I have an Asus K7V with a 750 Slot A Athlon. I had a 700 on it that I had previously tried to overclock to just 705mhz and it wouldn't even boot. (It still works in another machine) Not that I really need an increase in performance, I just wanted to try to overclock it for fun. ANyone have a suggestion on how I should do this and still retain "some" stability in my system?

There is no such thing as a "safe" overclock. Even a small overclock is dangerous to a processor. Imagine you are running in a marathon, you have your pace set, making good time, and not killing yourself. Suddenly, the guy next to you pulls out a gun and says "run faster". Of course, you will be able to for a while, but eventually you won't be able to run at all anymore. This is basically what you do to a processor when you overclock it. It is designed to run at a set pace, and if it is forced to exceed it, it can't hold out for long.....

Willie Make It, thats a very good way to explain it. But, if you wish to over clock your CPU, just make sure you get plenty of air curculation. I personally dont overclock simply because the performance of a 1ghz thunderbird is so good anyway, I wouldnt really gain any "real world" performance.

Thanks guys. I know what overclocking does. I'm convinced I have the fastest 486 running on the planet at 120mhz and has been stable for a long time. I get the preformance I need out of my athlon 750, but I just wanted to try to see if I could get it to do it. With the price of processors lately if I need faster, I'd just buy the chip. The idea was to just try it for a kind of game i guess.

Built it when I lived in Plano 5 years ago. Still works for internet and ms word running w95. If i didn't play computer games it might still be my only machine. What do you guys think? When will the speed of computers surpass the need of the average consumer?

I totally agree, if it wasnt for games and a few applications, I think we would all be using slower CPU's and not trying to tweek the guts out of the poor thing LOL
