Thunderbird Overheat

I recently got an 800mhz Thunderbird. It was running fine for a week. Yesterday, however, ASUS PC Probe (I have an Asus A7V) sounded an alarm - MY CPU WAS RUNNING AT 86 CELSIUS. I shut down my pc and now it won't boot. I don't think the cpu is fried because it shutdown properly. Any ideas on what caused this or why it won't boot?

btw - The cpu is cooled by a Silver Orb (the new golden orb for thunderbirds). The fan was working fine at the time the cpu overheated and NO the cpu was not overclocked. The cpuu was running at about 68 celcius for the past week.

geez-that sucks. i have the same board and processor but have not installed it yet. maybe it was problem with the cpu plugnplay? if you have the board with the jumpers, did you try the manual settings? and btw 68 celsius seems a bit high, doesn't it?

If that thing was running at 86C, it's probably toast.

One question - does your pc display ANY information to the screen like a video bios or the bios itself or is it just a black screen. If you dont have any info on the screen then try and reseat the processor, just to make sure its not dead. If you do see info tell me what it is.

Do you log your events with PC-Probe ? (not that you can check them at the moment)
Just to see if your voltages were ok at the time. That does seem a bit hot though. My Duron 650 at 927 still only made it to 66 Celcius, that's only with a generic fan/sink. I thought that was hot, but now its all back to stock, in a Q3 game, it still gets to 47, might go back to 909 considering that

from what i have heard about the thunderbirds is that if it beeps for 8 sec or more that processor is now fried i know the durons are more forgiving with temp but for the most part your out of luck

I have been running my tbird800 on the a7v for about two weeks.highest temp with the golden orb was 53c when oc'd to 880. normal temp is 49c max no overclock. the previous temp you stated of 68c seems way high. something was wrong from the beginning. try turning off the atx switch for at least a minute, hold down the insert key, and turn on atx switch, then power switch. try it 4-5 times and see if it comes back to life.
