Post W2K & Direct CD - Has this happened to anyone else?

My computer is an AMD 750 not overclocked, on an AK72 (AOPen) MB, 256 meg memory, a 52X CD-ROM, and an Acer 8X4X32 CDRW, running W2K with no problems. I use Adaptec EZ CD Creator without a hitch for some time now. I mistakenly decided to install Direct CD, which came with EZ CD Creator. After installing it, and the downloaded update from Adaptec, W2K cannot load the drivers for either CDROM. I uninstalled both CD Creator and Direct CD, and still, no CDROMS. I removed the drivers, uninstalled the CDROMS and reinstalled them, Reloaded W2K Update (through the network) and W2K SP1a, and still, no CDROMS. The BIOS finds them, and I can boot from the CDROM. W2K reports it cannot load the drivers. I am lost. The only solution appears to be to reinstall W2K from scratch. Any thoughts?

I recall The Register reporting on this problem with an HP writer. It has something to do with a crappy Adaptec DLL. They also posted a fix to it a few days later. Check the archives www.theregister.co.uk. It may take some digging but I know it's there.
