NEC 7700A CDRW probs w/ win XP
Hi all, I recently installed windows XP onto my system. I've done a clean format and an upgrade from windows 98 SE, but I still get this problem.
I can play audio CDs, but there is static in the back ground. I've checked and no it's not the CD. As well, I am UNABLE to access any programmes via the CDRW drive. I get errors like setup files are missing and whatnot. However, the CD works immacuately with windows 98!!
I don't understand why this is happening, could it be a BIOS problem, drivers, etc???!!! A friend lent me this version of XP and he/she hasn't had any problems with it as well as the others he/she has lent it to (totalling 6 or 7).
I am running an 1.2 gig AMD Athlon w/ 256 DDR ram. I have a K7AMA motherboard with...I'm not sure what the chipset is.
Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Hello,
Have you gone to the Motherboard manufactures website yet. Some of the MB companies are putting out BIOS updates for WinXP. MSI for example. Also, have you tried chaining the CDRW differently ( Primary/Secondary - Master/Slave)?
I Hope This Helps...

well, i have an NEC NR-7700A CD-RW drive, and have had no problems running XP, so it sounds like its down to either mobo or possibly cables, as computron99 stated in an above post, download the latest bios update for your boared and see if t hat works,
i take it your machine ran well with 98? also did u upgrade over the top, or did u do a fresh install.

do you have an audio cable hooked to your cd drive?
i know with WinMe (a.k.a. most useless OS) if you don't hook an audio cable cable up, it is suposed to work great, which isn't always the case, try hooking one up and see if that clears up the cd static problem
Just my experiance anyway...
