Unhappy ASUS A7V problems with CDroms

I love this board but its giving me no end of problems with my DVD or CDR.
both pieces of equipment worked fine, read all disk formats on my k6-2/550 system, but this wont just isnt cutting it.
The DVD is tobisha, detected by mobo, but won't read certain brands of CDR's that I've burned (Sony)
The CDR is a mitsumi, and the bios won't even detect it. My other system detects it fine, worked great on the other.
I've got both connected through the Secondary IDE channel, the CDR is getting power(can open/close drive). DVD plays normal cds, dvds, just fine. (I just both a 50pack bundle of sony cdr's so this drive reading this is rather important.)
I've got the VIA 4-1 driver installed, latest version.
Windows ME (I know I know... This might just be the root of my problem but don't want to resort to a install of Win98se if I don't have to, I HATE having to reinstall windows...)
    Any ideas?
BTW, all of my other hardware is working beautifully, no temp problems, this is the ONLY part of the system that is still giving me trouble. :-(

FINALLY got the cd-r to work over the weekend, I had a number of cables lying around and try one, and what'd ya know - it worked! With that problem solved I tried something else - burning one of my Sony CDRs to see if it work... Surprise surprise, the cd burned, and the system will read it. Guess something might have been funny with the way the other cd's were burned.. but I've got them to work on a number of different systems before. Oh well, I'm just happy that the cd's wont go to waste... I may have gotten them cheap buying in bulk buy Sony cd's still aren't cheap...
