Resolved [RESOLVED] Alternative for M$ Office...

Ok, I've heard over and over from the Linux community how good StarOffice was for a free software package. So I was happy to see that StarOffice 6.0 is going to being released in a multiplatform format.

I downloaded the 6.0 beta for Windows and I'm startled how many features it has and it is natively compatible with Office documents up to XP. They even made the gui look and function like Office 2000. Kudos to Sun for trying to even the playing field again.

If your interested, try to get the beta from Sun.com at http://www.sun.com/staroffice/6.0beta

Let me know what you think..

StarOffice 5.2 was already multiplatform, as far as I know.

I've tried it on Linux and Windows and I like the features and possibilities.

    BUT...

I'm a control freak and I will *not* let an office suite become my desktop/work environment.

That particular philosophy just doesn't do it for me.

As far as I know (I haven't gotten the 6.0 beta yet, just read the reviews), they've ditched the desktop environment thing now. Apparently the integration is much like MS Office in that only the app you're using is launched, no desktop manager or extra garbage.

I'll be sure to look into that.

That was pretty much the only criticism I had for the *FREE* product!
