CD Rom, Runs off Sound Card?

I have a Packard Bell the the orignal Sound card, (creative Lab) Went out on. The CD is an IDE hookup, but went to the sound card. The new card that I put in doesn't have the IDE interfaceing hookup on the card. When I connected the CD Rom to the Slave IDE off the Hard Drive cable, the computer just locks up, won't even boot! Do I also have to replace the CD Rom, or is there a way, or driver for the cd rom that will allow it to run from the mother board IDE controller?

The CDROM drive your talking about is not an IDE CDROM, it's propriatory, probably panasonic which also had a 40 pin interface and looked like an IDE connection. Without a controler card (which was built into your old sound card) the CDROM will not work.

It's possible (however unlikely) that the controller on the old card will still work. If it does, you will probably have to fight with it a little to get the sound working from the new card (disable sound on old card.)

Also some manufactured machines need the hdd and cdrom on Cable Select for the 2 to work together.

Get rid of that old 2X CD-ROM drive and get a new one.

Thanks for your segestion. I'm sure that it is the correct thing to do, But you seem most of the work on computers that I do are for those whom are less privilaged. I live in a farming community. I collect older computers and Give them to the famils that can't afford one! So that thier children might be able to learn about computers! Thanks again! God Bless!

try to find real old sound card as most of them could be used with different cd,but you have to know the brand of the cd to plug it rigth,and use the proper driver for it,you can usually pick them up real cheap in pc store in their part bins,good luck,Clauded
