screen saver password protection problem

I have a screensaver set to come and with password protection, but every once in a while (ranging from a week to a month) the password protection checkbox gets unchecked without my knowledge. I know I am the only one using this computer since i live alone, but could you please help me understand why this is happening and what I can do about it? thank you.

Sounds to me like someone is messing with you or your customer. I've not heard of any issues like that with win2k. About the only thing I can think of at the moment is make sure you have sp2 installed.

I have seen this before also, and I am not sure what causes it. At my last job, we had some user's screensaver magically uncheck itself.

Here is how to fix it. What we are going to do is implement a local policy that will force the screensaver to always be password protected. Even if that box gets unchecked, it will recheck itself (it should anyway).

Click Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc
Goto User Config -> Admin Templates -> Control Panel -> Display
Double-Click on "Password Protect the Screensaver" -> Hit the "Enabled" option.

You are now good to go. This MMC Snapin allows you to set local policies on a computer. Remember that if any Domain Policies are defined they will override the local ones.

Just had a good look through it and it looks to do the same functions as TweakUI does, but Much Much More!!!!

O BTW.

You may notice if you right-click on the "Administrative Templates" option you can add/remove them (sound familiar to NT4?)

Basically this allows you to:
1) Write your own *.adm files
2) Download Custom ones to add additional settings
3) Add more from Windows

In fact, there are more templates included with Windows, just look. (should be in your inf folder)

I've been playing with group policies for quite a while now, I'd never heard of that trick before. Where did you get thet ?

I have actually already been talking with Scott about setting up a Group Policy and Scripting Community at Windrivers. So in the near future you will probably see quite a bit more information coming in those categories...
