Windows 2000 hanging when opening programs etc
Hi
I've come across a very strange error on one of the PCs at work. It hangs for about 2-3 minutes whenever I try to open up word/excel or even explorer or IE.
It's got SP2 and office 97 on it, this is the same setup that over 100 other computers have without coming across this particular problem. I've already tried reinstalling anti virus software, disabling it, reinstalling office, removing any mapped drives (incase it's trying to check these). seriously running out of ideas!
And now the PC next to it's started doing the same.. worst thing it that it doesn't do it everyday lol!
any help or random ideas greatly appreciated! =)

Depending on your set-up:
If you have workgroups/User Profiles on a file server, you may find that the file locations under Tools>Options are taking a while to resolve.
Sometimes Word/Excel files (as IE) look for a default location to load something from. Are you happy the problem boxes can resolve IP addresses, DNS names (if you use), default gateway(s) if you use?
Are the problem boxes sharing a common switch or hub? If so, cabling or hardware might be causing a problem if the apps are looking for network locations.
Do you have a system manegement tool (such as LAN auditor or any other)? These can cause delays if trying to log all actions
Might be worth checking if certain USERS are affected more than others - might give a clue as to network comms problems
Do you have Computer Browser service disabled on these boxes? If not, can cause resolving conflicts with the PDC
Hope something here sparks a new line of enquiry!
Good luck!

When I see this happen here its usually due to incorrect NIC settings. Either its set on Auto Detect for speed and duplex, or its on half when it should be on full etc. You might check that! Good luck!
