Post Where is the "systray" info stored in registry?

Got a problem with some software... When I uninstall the software (it's Creative, BTW) the systray gets knocked out... Almost all icons, including Norton AV, Norton FW, pop-up killer, Adaptec stuff and ALL Creative stuff (even stuff not related to the app) get removed from systray. The uninstall also managed to screw up my AV software, so that I had to reinstall it!!

Creative say try using the Win2k installer rather than Creative installer to try to prevent it from happening again...

But in meantime, how can I put back the icons in my systray? Opening apps and ticking box for "show in systray" doesn't seem to work for some apps (i.e. Norton FW and Adaptec DirectCD) Is there a registry key I can modify to set it back to the way it was (without having to reinstall everything...?)

    Cheers!

First question - what Creative software is causing the problems, and why are you unintalling it on a regular basis? Check with Creative for an updated version or troubleshooting info.

Apps loaded into the systray can be loaded from a lot of different locations, but MSCONFIG.EXE will let you see them all in one shot. but if something removes them, you won't be able to restore them with any tool - unless you have a backup of the registry.

MacGyver - thanks for your answer, dude.

Ok - software is the DVD player for Dxr2 (old DVD card). The drivers for the card are cool, but the software that plays DVDs is a bit cr*p - I seem to have reinstalled it several times in last few weeks (have recently upgraded to Win2k). Doesn't happen often, but it's just anoying. This is the first time I reinstalled it after having Norton stuff on there, and it's a pain to have to reinstall FW and AV as it takes bloody ages to get all the updates....

Have checked for updates, but it looks like I'm using the most recent software.

So as far as you know I can't edit reg to force my apps to be displayed in systray without reinstalling them...? Dammit. On the occasion I do have to reinstall the software (it will happen again, I'm sure) I have to reinstall all other apps....? Damn - what a nightmare!!

Ok - thanks for the advice, dude.

If you decide to edit your startup programs you'll probably find that Win 2K doesn't have msconfig. Run a search for "msconfig in win2k" and you will find a few programs that will do the same thing.

Mope - good call, dude! Just downloaded some freeware called "starupcpl" written by Mike Lin. It's ace. Haven't rebooted yet (so am not entirely sure it'll work) but it certainly looks to have done the job.

Seems to have put back my firewall and DirectCD icons. Nice one - cheers!
