    Lightbulb Win2000 Hardware incompatibilities

Ok...I'm trying to start up a listing of known hardware incompatibilities in Windows2000 and any possible workarounds...input would be appreciated. I'm mainly starting with multimedia cards, since these incompatibilities seem to be the most common.

Oh, and since the Asus P5A motherboard seems to have some Win2000 problems with it's AGP port, I'd like to hear from anyone who has successfully installed Windows2000 on a system with an Asus P5A motherboard (I'm mainly interested in your video setup)

    Thumbs down

I have an HP 7100i CD Writer installed which Windows 2000 recognises as a CD ROM Drive but when you load the HP Software to control the writer and reboot Windows, you just get the blue screen of death.

Have checked the MS and HP sites but of course no drivers on there yet !

Um.....IS there a blue screen of death in Windows2000? I haven't seen one yet......anyway, have you tried using different software, such as WinOnCD or Easy CD Creator?

No, I think it has been replaced by the black screen of death - advancements in technology I'm sure.

The software we were trying was Easy CD - probably just have to wait until W2K is released officially to get it sorted out.

Well, I guess that is an advancment...black is less annoying then blue. Anyway, I know there is a problem sometimes with EasyCD with WindowsNT. Anything that you install, you have to make sure it runs under Windows2000...which version of EasyCD is it? 4.0? You may have to pick up WinOnCD as an alternative, but I heard there are issues with that as well as far as Windows2000 is concerned...mainly concerning the packet writing..*ding* That's it..when you installed EasyCD, did you also install DirectCD as a part of the installation? If so, try again WITHOUT installing DirectCD (uninstall EasyCd and DirectCD first).

if you are using adaptec easy cd creator, There is a patch at www.adaptec.com to make it work with win2000. It's called cdr4up.exe. You have to load that 1st, then you can load EasyCD creator except for direct cd. Then reboot your computer. When back online, also install the other 2 patches that are on adaptec's website - cdc-35c.exe and floppy105.exe. Reboot once again and voila! That's how it worked for me and hopefully for most of you guys/gals.

Direct CD works fine under win2k. There is a "patched" install.

Look at this site(about halfway down the page)

Oh the blue screen still lives. Found that out while installing and finding that win2000 did not like my ata66 card (its not a promise). On third reboot it would just lock. Knew it was either the matrox card or the controller so pulled the ata66 card and on the next boot windows gave a lovely blue stop error and was nice enough to give me the driver's name in question. Went to a command line, renamed the driver and was able to boot into windows. Then was able to download the win2k driver and all was well with the world.

It was a SIIG ATA66 card by the way.
