Resolved [RESOLVED] Networking between 98 and 2000?

I can't get my file and printer sharing to work correctly between 98 and 2000. I can see the 2000 machine from the 98 machine but when i try to access it through network neighborhood it ask for a password even though i specified no password. and the 2000 machine cant see the 98 machine at all. Please help or provide a link to some good networking sites.

I'm not familar with 2000, but if it's like NT, check your guest account.
If it is disabled, Enable it, and that will get rid of that password.

I have the same problem! The 98 Machine can access my computer, see me without a problem. I have an NTFS 5.0 drive and it cannot access that, but on my Fat32 drives, it can access it. I can't see the win98 machine from my 2000 one! VERY STRANGE! Guest is defaulted to be enabled on 2000 as well. hmm....

What kinda protocol are you using? Are you running it peer-2-peer?

I am running TCP/IP for the Internet and IPX for the local. I am on a cable modem and trying to establish a local communciation. It worked fine under 98 before Win2k. The 98 machine CAN see the Win2k, but the Win2k cannot see the 98!

Ok. To get win2k/nt4 and win9x to act properly when using IPX, on your 9x machine, pull up the properties for the IPX protocol and enable the option for "Netbios over IPX". you will need to reboot for that to take effect, but after you do the 9x machine will show up in network neighboorhood. as far as file and print sharing, make sure the account the 9x user logs in with has access permissions for the resource you want to share.
