I currently have a win98SE box running. I want to add a partition for windows 2000 or possibly nt4. after that is done and i install win2k or nt to that partiton...how do i go about running my previously installed programs in win2000 without reinstalling them?
ps..i meant to say [i]dual bootting...

Heh, dual booing, sounds like the fans when John Rocker comes out.
Anyway, I think that if you install OSes to different partitions, you have to install the programs there too. At the very least, you have to reinstall the programs into the same directory you have them in currently. Someone who has a dual-boot system might want to correct me or agree with me.

Yes, no matter where you install the second OS, your programs will have to be reinstalled over the top of themselves. This builds the registry and copies the necessary .dll's, etc. for the second OS with all of the proper entries for each program. This way, you can run the same programs from the same location no matter which OS you're using.

so..just to get things straight and avoid a lot of mess...i have to reinstall each program again...now...do i do this under while running win98se or under windows 2000?
after doing so correctly. i will be able to access the program under either OS i choose to boot to. keep in mind that i will be installing win2000 to a second hard drive so that my win98se will be on ide-0 and my win2k will be on ide-1.
please pardon my "over-simplification" if you can call it that. i just learned the hard way to be 110% explicit on both ends to avoid mass confusion and problems.
thanks..

I have done and redone what you are describing and I can say without a doubt that you have to reinstall your programs under Win 2000. The way I have always done it is to install Win 2000 on a second PARTITION on my hard drive. I have never tried to install on another hard drive. It would be the same either way though.

Hi.
Some programs can simply be pulled back and forth between OSs in a dual boot situation; others cannot. This is one of the reasons I use Eudora for email rather than outlook - it is most convenient to maintain a single set of mail boxes.
Somewhere in one of my NT books there was something about dualbooting and getting programs installed in W9x recorded in the NT registry so that they can be run from either OS. I can't find the reference at the moment. I remember that I didn't try it so my feeling is that is was probably more trouble that it was worth. If I find the reference I will post it.

I've just installed a dual boot system myself Win98 and Win2k.
HouseIsland is right. Apps like Eudora don't need to be re-installed over both OS's but suites like Off2k need installing over both OS's. So like me, I have both partitions on my HD as FAT32, and I use one partition where I store the Off2k files, but I installed the same app from both OS's. Saves space that way!
