    Post hmm, another problem.

now my windows 2000 instalation has developed and entirely new and original problem.
when i load windows 2000, it runs fine for about 3 minutes after which i get this stop error:
    PAGE FAULT IN NON-PAGED AREA
the stop message also mentions the file:
    ntoskrnl.exe
    why does this happen?

a page fault is the number of times that data has to be retrieved from a disk becuz it was not found in memory. It might be that first of all your hd might be out of space. Second i would check your page file size, you might want to increase it. Check it in System Properties--Performance Options then Virtual Memory

Something I use to eliminate some problems, in GPEDIT.MSC, under "Local Computer Policy\Computer configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security options" I enable the option to "Clear Virtual memory pagefile when system shuts down". This option will slow the shutdown process by as much as several minutes (no more that 2 for me), but I am OK with that. I leave it on my laptop always; I rarely reboot, instead I use standby or hibernate, reboot is for maintenance. On my desktop I use this option, reboot, run defrag, and then reboot again before disabling it; really helps keep that page file tight!

It might be worth a try. You can always disable it after the reboot, if you don’t want it to run at every reboot.

This option cleared up some problems I had with an Inpaging blue screen error I received in the past on the laptop. I can’t recall the exact error, but it was different from yours.
