Restrictions in Win2k
My kids have their own logon to my Win2k box, and I am trying to restrict their use of the internet.
I have a group called "Kids" that I have given NoAccess to my movies folder, etc. (No porn, just lots of pain/gore) I am curious if you guys have been able to restrict access to the web without the use of external software. I am running NTFS on all my drives.
I have not really tried much, I did notice that the RSACI ratings seemed to affect me also. I was just wondering if anyone had implemented this. I only need it for a temporary solution, as I will be setting up ISA server very shortly.
Thanks,
Matt

ShadowKing...how exactly did you locally restrict access to certain folders in 2k? I can easily do it over a network, but never could block those files locally.
I'm using NTFS...does that make a difference?
BTW, you can just change the settings in IE for the kids. Don't see why it should affect you.

Its easy.
For my movies, there are quite a few that they are allowed to watch, and are fun, so I right clicked on my movies folder, clicked properties, then Security. I added the "Kids" group and clicked "Deny" on "List folder contents" and "Write". I then dragged shorcuts to their favorite movies to a movies folder under their profile. They can watch the movies, but cannot browse the folder to see more.
As for other folders I just denied everything, because I did not want them doing anything to the stuff. My MP3s I denied write access (which includes Delete) so that they can listen to them, but not erase them. Microsoft does warn against using the Deny part of permissions, because you can really screw yourself if you are a member of the "Kids" group for example. But just do it with care.

Do you want to allow some internet access or block them totally?

um, its called the security tab...
permissions, not a hard thing to do.
as for the internet usage, best bet is to sped the money and get netnanny 4.0, install it as the "kids" user, make sure you grant them admin rights first (or at least power user)
then after the install reboot, and relog in as "kids" to ensure that it doesn;t have any other installation parts. configure software.
log off then on as yourself or admin, and yank their rights, or allow them only guest access.
this should make it that only thier profile has the software installed, and yours is clean.
