    Post Novell 5.x

We are looking at upgrading from Netware 3.12 to a 5.x environment. Any advice? What kind of server specs would you all recommend?

    Thanks!

By the by, anyone else having trouble getting to Novell's website?

the company i am at- we are in the middle of it.
we are planning on using a p3-500 dual w/512 mb ram (compaq proliant 3000)
it has a 3200 controller, 2x9.1gb in mirror (sys)
and 6x9.1gb in raid 5 (Vol)

so far it eats everything we throw at it.
here is the bad thing - there is no migration from 3.12 to 5.x
you have to stop using 3.12 and start using 5.x

    Cool

Well, here are some questions: how many users do you have? what is your current server hardware configuration? What business are you in? Do you run applications off the server, or just use it for storing files? What's your current hard disk space consumption? Will you be using the server for databases, email, etc...

Also one thing to keep in mind is that the way you administer 5.x over 3.12 is TOTALLY different, so you will have to learn how to do a lot of stuff all over again. Set aside some money for training. If you can, get somebody who's done an NW5.x install before, it makes it a whole lot easier.

Actually, thye migration tool included on the NetWare 5 CD (or 5.1 CD) makes it easy to port bindery objects into an NDS tree and place them in the container you specify. I've done it at least a dozen times, and the only thing you really have to do beforehand is to make sure all your 3.12 server files are up to date, mainly your C library and your Streams nlms. Once you have everything up to snuff, the migration tool is a drag-and-drop operation for migrating bindery objects into the NDS structure. It's fairly straigtforward and well documented.

Please provide more information on your environment:

    1: Number of users
    2: Volume size
3: What do you want the server to do
    4: More specific questions

I would take the NetWare 5 CNA course, make sure I had plenty of RAM and be sure that all my software was updated to a compatible version (do not forget any backup software, internet software, or any other software that at all interacts with the server.)
